Stop BDS in Alameda County

On Friday, October 3, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors will consider adopting new “Responsible & Ethical Investment Criteria” that can be used to advance Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) actions against Israel. Instead of objectively advancing impact investing, proponents have already been using this policy to delegitimize corporations with a perceived connection to Israel. This ill-conceived policy will jeopardize local finances and stigmatize the Jewish community.

I urge you to VOTE NO on Treasurer Hank Levy’s proposed new investment policy.

This policy threatens to reduce returns, cut into county revenues, and put essential services at risk — all while giving the Treasurer’s team unilateral discretion to make investment decisions based on personal ideology.

Furthermore, this proposal has already injected divisive foreign affairs debates into our local government in a way which targets those with connections to Israel – especially our local Jewish and Israeli-American community. If adopted, this proposal’s vague language and lack of accountability will exacerbate divisions at a time when our community desperately needs unity. 

With tax revenues already under pressure and urgent needs in housing, safety, and community services, Alameda County cannot afford an investment policy that risks both our finances and our residents’ well-being.
